Love Reminder – Danny’s Story

The following Love Reminder is a true story shared by Danny, one of our early Practical Love community members.

Danny is nervous. Just a few weeks ago he started in a new secondary school with all new classmates. He is already fond of two girls.

Today he came to school early. Today’s the day. He built up the courage to share his feelings – with both of them.

He put one love note inside each girl’s school desk and then waited. The first girl came in, opened her desk, saw the note, read it, and turned to Danny and smiled.

Danny’s heart was smiling too.

The second girl came in, opened her desk, saw the note, read it, and turned to Danny and smiled.

Danny’s heart was smiling even more.

The girls looked at each other and something changed, smiles turned into anger and Danny was left in confusion. Their anger traveled to their older brothers and that was the start of 3 heavy years for Danny. What he did was never really forgiven or forgotten.

Liking two people might sound innocent. I don’t know about you but what could be more innocent than little Danny liking two girls at the same time and wanting to share it. And what could be more innocent than the reaction of either of the girls, finding out that the love they received was not only theirs.

If you are human I believe you have either been jealous or attracted to more than one person, probably both. Behind our jealousy is often the beautiful needs for security and stability and behind attraction there are other beautiful needs such as freedom, adventure and connection. The needs of both sides are strong, you might call it our own humanity meeting our own humanity, and very often it ends in conflict.

If we stop and look around us. Danny’s story was from secondary school, but when taking a closer look, aren’t we handling these challenges in a similar way in adult life? Do we have a blind spot? Are there alternatives? What if we start talking…
